How to Use HandiShims

for Cabinet & Countertop Installation

Achieve a flawless, high-end finish on your next kitchen or bathroom install by using HandiShims. Unlike tapered wood shims that can compress, split, or rot over time, HandiShims provide a perfectly flat, solid, and non-compressive base for leveling base cabinets and supporting heavy countertops.

Our high-density plastic shims ensure your installation remains perfectly level for the life of the project. They are rot-proof, making them essential for use in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms, especially around sinks and dishwashers.

Use HandiShims for:

  • Leveling Base Cabinets: Easily and accurately level base cabinets on uneven floors, creating a perfectly flat foundation for the countertop.
  • Spacing & Aligning Uppers: Use shims to set consistent spacing between upper cabinets or between a cabinet and a wall.
  • Supporting Countertops: Provide solid, non-compressive support for heavy materials like granite, quartz, and marble, preventing sagging or stress cracks.
  • Creating Reveals: Precisely set the gap between the top of the cabinet and the underside of the countertop

How to Use:

Leveling Base Cabinets:

  1. Find the highest point on the floor where your cabinets will sit. Start installing from this point.
  2. As you set the adjoining cabinets, place HandiShims under the cabinet base to bring it up to the level of the first one.
  3. Use a long level (4-foot or 6-foot) across the tops of the cabinets. Tap shims in or out, or stack different thicknesses (Green 1/32”, Red 1/16”, White 1/8”, Blue 1/4”) until all cabinets are perfectly level and flush with each other.
  4. Secure the cabinets to the wall studs through the shims for a rock-solid installation that won't compress or settle.

Setting Countertops:

  1. After the base cabinets are level, lay a bead of adhesive or silicone.
  2. Place HandiShims on top of the cabinet edges at the front and back, especially at corners and over cabinet joints, to create a level plane.
  3. Carefully set the countertop onto the shims. The shims provide a flat, stable surface that absorbs no moisture and won't compress under the countertop's weight.
  4. Once the countertop is perfectly positioned and level, trim the excess shim by snapping it at the scored for effortless splitting line for a clean, invisible finish.
