How to Use HandiShims

for Perfect Tile Spacing

Achieve professional, level results and perfectly consistent grout lines on your next tiling job with HandiShims. Unlike traditional wedge shims, HandiShims provide a flat, stable surface that won't compress or rot, making them ideal for wet environments like bathrooms and kitchens.

Use HandiShims for:

  • Consistent Grout Joints: Use the shims as spacers. Their exact thicknesses (from 1/32" to 1/4") allow you to maintain precise, uniform grout lines across the entire job.
  • Leveling the First Course: Ensure your critical first row of tile is perfectly level on uneven floors.
  • Lippage Control: Place shims at tile intersections to prevent lippage (one tile edge being higher than its neighbor) while the mortar sets.
  • Supporting Wall Tile: When tiling a wall, HandiShims are perfect for supporting the first course off the floor or countertop, leaving a consistent gap for expansion.

How to Use:

  1. Select Your Shim: Choose the HandiShim color that matches your desired grout line or the gap you need to fill (Green 1/32”, Red 1/16”, White 1/8”, Blue 1/4”).
  2. Place as Spacers: Insert shims between tiles as you set them into the mortar.
  3. Level & Adjust: Use the shims to level tiles or maintain spacing against walls. Because they provide a flat surface and resist compression, you can trust them to hold the tile exactly where you place it.
  4. Remove or Grout Over: Once the mortar is set, you can easily remove the HandiShims. Because they are plastic and won't rot, they can also be left in place and grouted over in many applications without compromising the installation.
